Database Modeling that is!

Database modeling SHOULD DEFINITELY be done! It is NOT simply drawing "pretty" pictures as some believe!
Your database model SHOULD drive the database, it should be your "golden" copy of the database.
ALL database modifications SHOULD come FROM your database model! No exceptions!

ERwin

We at Caremark are practitioners of the ERwin Data Modeling software toolset. We believe it is the best data modeling software tool available.
Whether modeling a relational database or a star schema analysis database, ERwin should be employed, the ERwin file(s) and the ERwin generated master DDL script(s) should be placed under version control and ALL database modifications should first be made in ERwin and then pushed out to physical databases from there.
Once this practice is adopted, it will SAVE time down the line and ensure DB modifications are completed properly, in accordance with the relational algebra.
In addition, your "golden" DB model, along with the generated DDL script, BOTH become valuable disaster recovery tools for your organization, allowing for a complete rebuild of the database structures.
